Dr. Kruger,
I have a 2 year old bitch (German shepherd) who mated on the 10th of February. Do you have any advice for me? Thanks

Bolinda W., Cranbourne, Australia

Hi Bolinda,
Your bitch is due next week, right...I really don’t know how much experience you have with whelping so it is hard to know what you might not know about it. At this point, I would feed her several small meals a day, and I would take her temperature at 8am and 8pm. As you probably know, the temperature will make a major drop usually 12 to 24 hours before the onset of labor. If you have no experience delivering pups, I would have a wash cloth handy as you may have to pull a pup. If you see any part of a pup for a period of 3 to 5 minutes...Try to get a hold ‘of it and pull...It is amazing how much pressure you can exert on a pup and it will still be ok. When you help the pup to start breathing, hold the head downward and stroked the pup firmly, with the towel, directly down the back of the pup...this is very stimulating the pup. Don’t give up on a slow to breath pup...sometimes it is almost an hour before they come around... just keep stimulating it. I surely would keep in contact with your vet. Let him know you are having a litter so he can stand by for any problem. Hope this helps you. My puppy supplement would very good for your bitch and puppies.
